1. Marrakech - Agafay Desert (off-road) - Berber village - camel ride - desert camp lunch - Lalla Takerkouste Lake - Marrakech
Leaving town, around 9:00 AM. Your driver picks you up at your Marrakech hotel at approximately 9:00 AM and turns southwest. The 45 minutes on the road run through farmland and olive groves, and you watch the green drain out of the landscape as the Agafay stone desert takes over.
Off the tarmac. The 4x4 leaves the paved road for the Agafay's rocky ground, where the hills undulate, the riverbeds run dry and arid plain reaches out to the horizon. Your guide pulls up at the most dramatic viewpoints. Herders work these hills, so flocks of sheep and goats often cross your route.
Tea in a Berber village. A traditional Berber settlement out in the desert is the next stop. A local family welcomes you with mint tea, fresh-baked bread and olive oil, and your guide translates while your hosts talk about living in the Agafay: water, farming, the rhythm of the seasons and customs that go back generations.
The camel hour. At the desert camp you are introduced to your camel and to the camel guide. The animals here are gentle and well trained, and the guide helps you mount and then walks beside the caravan the whole way. The ride lasts one hour over bare country: hills of rock, riverbeds long dry, wide desert valleys. The views open on all sides, with the Atlas Mountains far off. There are halts at good spots for photos and video. This is not the green palm-grove riding you find nearer the city.
Lunch under canvas. When you climb down you sit to a three-course Moroccan lunch beneath a Bedouin-style nomadic tent. Fresh salads come first, a chicken or vegetable tagine after them, and seasonal fruit with mint tea to close, mineral water on the table throughout. Open desert sky above, rocky ground in every direction.
Lalla Takerkouste, then home. From lunch you drive to Lalla Takerkouste, an artificial lake on the desert's edge. Its still blue water has the bare Agafay hills closing one side and the Atlas Mountains standing up behind. You stop for photographs and a quiet few minutes before the drive back. Marrakech is roughly 45 minutes away, and drop-off at your hotel is by approximately 5:00 PM, so the evening is yours.
