The road follows the A7 through argan country, with a coffee stop and a pause for the goats you find standing up in the branches. Once in Agadir the day takes in the cable car up to the 16th-century Kasbah Oufella at 236 metres, Souk El Had, the beach and its seaside promenade, the marina for a seafood lunch you choose and pay for yourself, and Crocopark with its 300-plus Nile crocodiles. The driver is outside your Marrakech hotel at 7:00 AM. Agadir is about 3 hours away on the A7, a modern and smooth road with good views, and the country changes as you go: the dry Haouz plain gives way to argan groves the closer you get to the coast. Coffee is taken along the road, and there is a stop for the photograph everyone wants, goats up in the branches.
Arrival in Agadir goes straight to the cable car. The ride lasts 7 to 10 minutes and lifts you 236 metres above the city to Kasbah Oufella, a hilltop fortress from the 16th century. From the top the view runs a full 360 degrees, over the 10 km crescent of Agadir beach, the Atlantic, the marina and the Atlas Mountains along the horizon. A walk round the Kasbah ruins turns up the well-known inscription, "Fear God and honour the King", which came through the devastating earthquake of 1960 intact. The ticket is covered. Back at the bottom, a short drive brings you to Souk El Had, which ranks among North Africa's largest markets, where over 3,000 stalls carry fresh produce, ceramics, leather goods, textiles, saffron, argan oil and spices. The people of Agadir do their own shopping here.
The middle of the day belongs to the sea. You can walk the seaside promenade, stretch out on the golden sand, or get into the Atlantic, which is calm here; the beach runs for 10 km, sun loungers and parasols can be rented, so pack a swimsuit. From there it is a short stroll to Agadir Marina, a modern waterfront of seafood restaurants, cafes and luxury yachts, where lunch is your call: grilled fish fresh off the boat, prawn tagine, a mixed seafood platter. You eat at your own pace and your own expense.
Crocopark is the last stop before the road home. It is part botanical garden, part crocodile habitat, sitting just outside the city, with walking paths through exotic plants and cactus beds and over 300 Nile crocodiles kept in naturalistic enclosures that are safe to walk past; the exhibits along the way cover crocodile biology and the conservation work behind it. Entrance is covered. Then comes the return drive of roughly 3 hours, with hotel drop-off in Marrakech by approximately 7:00 PM.
