Ouirgane to Imlil: The Gentle 3-Day Atlas Trek

Juniper forests, walnut groves and Berber guesthouses, with a mule always on hand for whichever stretch you’d rather ride.

A Trek That Meets You Where You Are

If you have ever wanted to try a 3-day Atlas trek without worrying about altitude, fitness, or how a nine-year-old will hold up on day two, this route was built with exactly that in mind. It stays under 2,500 metres for its entire length, so there is no acclimatisation to think about and no season where the pass closes. A mule walks with the group every day, and unlike most Atlas itineraries, you can ride any section you like, including the final climb.

The route runs through the Azzaden Valley, one of the quieter corners of the High Atlas, past juniper woodland, terraced walnut groves, and villages that still run on their own rhythm rather than a tourist schedule. Both nights are spent in family-run guesthouses, with meals cooked by the same families who put you up, not a trekking company’s catering crew.

It suits families, first-time trekkers, and anyone who wants real mountain quiet without a technical challenge attached to it.

How the Trail Climbs

The profile is gentler than most High Atlas routes: a steady four-hour warm-up on day one, a longer push through the Azzaden Valley on day two, then a single climb to Tizi N’Mzik before an easy drop into Imlil.

From the 1,400m trailhead at Imi Oughlad, the trail climbs in stages to the 2,489m summit of Tizi N’Mzik, then drops to Imlil at 1,740m for the drive back to Marrakech.

Day by Day

1

Day 1 · Imi Oughlad to Tinzert
≈4 hours walking · Starts at 1,400m

You leave Marrakech at 9am and drive to the trailhead at Imi Oughlad, already at 1,400 metres. From there it is a gentle four-hour walk into Ouirgane National Park, with juniper trees framing the first real mountain views. The path stays wide and forgiving the whole way, more a warm-up than a workout. You spend the night in a simple guesthouse in Tinzert, where your hosts put together a fragrant home-cooked dinner.

2

Day 2 · Into the Azzaden Valley
≈6 hours walking · Climbing toward 1,800m

The second day runs longer, around six hours, but it earns its length. Trails lined with ancient walnut trees lead you deeper into the Azzaden Valley, and Mount Toubkal appears above the greenery, its upper slopes still streaked with snow. The mule walks alongside the whole way, so you can cover every step on foot or ride through whichever stretch appeals to you. You end the day in Ait Aissa village, where the gîte sits under a sky with none of the light pollution you left behind in Marrakech.

3

Day 3 · Tizi N’Mzik Pass to Imlil
≈5 hours to the pass · 1,800m → 2,489m → 1,740m

One climb stands between you and the highest point of the trek: Tizi N’Mzik, at 2,489 metres. The mule is there again if you want it, all the way to the top. From the pass, the entire Imlil Valley opens up ahead of you, and behind you lies the Azzaden route you just crossed. After taking in the view, you descend into Imlil for a well-earned lunch, then your driver takes you back to Marrakech, arriving by evening.
