Mount Toubkal: The 4-Day Summit Trek Two nights of acclimatization, a training climb on the Ouanakrim twin peaks, and a summit attempt timed for when you are genuinely ready for it.
If you want the safest possible run at 4,167 metres, this is the itinerary built for it. Over four days you will be based at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207m, with three consecutive nights to let your body settle at altitude, a full day set aside to acclimatize on the Ouanakrim twin peaks, and a summit attempt timed for when you are genuinely ready for it.
There are no village detours and no rushed schedule here, just a steady, methodical build-up to the top. It is also the format we recommend most for winter climbs, when a bit of extra time and flexibility can make all the difference. Your licensed guide, mule support, three nights at the refuge, and full board are all included.

Building in a second day at 3,207m is what turns the summit from a long shot into a realistic goal for most fit trekkers. Day 1 gets you up to altitude, Day 2 trains your body at height on Ouanakrim, Day 3 is summit day, and Day 4 brings you back down. In winter, this structure doubles as a weather buffer: if conditions rule out a summit push on Day 3, you still have Day 4 in reserve. Good overall fitness is required, and in winter, crampons and an ice axe are mandatory.

The Difference
What Makes the Ouanakrim Day Different
This acclimatization day is exclusive to our 4-day itinerary. Rather than making straight for the summit, Day 2 sends you up the Ouanakrim twin peaks directly from the refuge, a dedicated altitude day that puts your body to a genuine test at height and builds the confidence you will need on summit day.
You then head back down to the refuge to rest, eat, and spend a second night at 3,207m. By the time you set out for 4,167m on Day 3, you will have had two complete days to adjust to the altitude.
Day by Day
Your 4-Day Toubkal Itinerary
The approach through the Ait Mizane Valley, three nights based at the refuge, the Ouanakrim acclimatization climb, a built-in weather buffer, and the 4,167m roof of North Africa.
From the Valley to the Refuge
Marrakech → Imlil (1,740m) → Sidi Chamarouch → Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
5–6 hours of trekking · +1,467m elevation gain
Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel for a scenic 90-minute drive to Imlil (1,740m), where you will meet your licensed mountain guide and the mule team. From there, the trail climbs through the Ait Mizane Valley, passing the village of Aremd on the way to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, set beside its waterfall. After a picnic lunch, you continue up to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m), either Les Mouflons or the Club Alpin hut, and settle into dormitory accommodation. This will be your base for the next three nights.
Altitude Training on Ouanakrim
Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) → Ouanakrim twin peaks → Toubkal Refuge
Dedicated altitude training · second night at the refuge
This is where the 4-day format really pays off. After breakfast at the refuge, you climb the Ouanakrim twin peaks, visible from the refuge and part of the same Toubkal massif. This dedicated altitude day puts your body through a genuine test at height, rewards you with panoramic views of Toubkal’s summit from a completely different angle, and builds the confidence you will rely on the next day.
You return to the refuge for dinner and a second night at 3,207m. By now you have had two full days adjusting to the altitude: you know how your body handles the height, whether your gear is working as it should, and you are as prepared as any trekker on the mountain. Rest well, tomorrow is summit day.
The Roof of North Africa
Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) → Summit (4,167m) → Toubkal Refuge
6–7 hours total · +960m / −960m
You head out early. The route follows the south cirque, loose scree and boulders in summer, packed snow and ice in winter, when crampons and an ice axe are required. After two nights at 3,207m, your body is well-acclimatized, and the climb to the top takes roughly 3 to 4 hours. At 4,167m you reach the iconic triangular summit marker, with 360-degree views over the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara, and the Marrakech plain. Plan on about 45 minutes at the top before starting back down.
You descend to the refuge for lunch and a third night there. Unlike the 2-day and 3-day versions of this trek, there is no need to push all the way back to Imlil today. Instead you rest at the refuge, recover, celebrate reaching the summit, and get ready for an easy walk out tomorrow.
An Easy Descent Back to Marrakech
Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) → Sidi Chamarouch → Imlil (1,740m) → Marrakech
4–5 hours of trekking · drive back to Marrakech
After breakfast, you descend at a relaxed pace, passing the Sidi Chamarouch shrine and retracing your steps through the Ait Mizane Valley back to Imlil (1,740m), where lunch is waiting. Your driver will be ready for the transfer back to Marrakech, getting you in with the evening free. Four days, one summit, and about as much preparation as a climb like this allows: trek complete.
