Kasbah Telouet & Ait Ben Haddou
Marrakech Full-Day Trip
Make your Marrakech visit more memorable with an unforgettable full-day trip through the High Atlas Mountains. The journey begins with a dramatic drive over the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres above sea level — the highest road pass in Africa — where green Berber villages cling to the mountain faces and sweeping valley views reward every curve of the road.
Approximately three hours later, you arrive at the legendary fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s best-preserved Kasbahs. Its distinctive Saharan architecture — adobe walls, grill-carved windows, and soft peach-toned towers — has made it an iconic backdrop for world-famous film productions.
The return to Marrakech follows the ancient Caravan Route through the Telouet Valley, where the atmospheric Telouet Kasbah stands as a monument to French-Moroccan history. Surrounded by palm, fig, and olive trees, its ornate interiors — original zellij tilework, preserved silks, and grand ceremonial halls — tell the story of the powerful El Pacha Glaoui family.
Highlights of the Day
Kasbah Telouet
The Glaoui Legacy — French-Arabian Grandeur
“A palace frozen in time — where French colonialism and Moroccan grandeur converge in a valley of palms.”
Situated along the ancient Caravan Route in the lush Telouet Valley, the Telouet Kasbah is one of Morocco’s most evocative historic monuments. Once the seat of the powerful El Pacha Glaoui family, its corridors, reception halls, and private chambers were lavishly decorated with hand-carved plasterwork, original zellij tilework, and painted cedar ceilings that rival the finest riads in Marrakech.
The Kasbah’s architecture reflects a fascinating fusion of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and French colonial influence — a testament to the complex political alliances of the early 20th century. Among the ornate details you’ll discover preserved silks, intricate geometric tile patterns including the iconic Star of David motif, and commanding reception rooms that once hosted heads of state.
The surrounding valley of palm, fig, and olive trees provides a serene counterpoint to the Kasbah’s grandeur, making Telouet a destination as visually varied as it is historically profound.
Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou
UNESCO World Heritage — Saharan Architecture at its Finest
“One of the most perfectly preserved examples of southern Moroccan earthen architecture — and one of the world’s great UNESCO sites.”
Ait Ben Haddou is among the finest surviving examples of Saharan ksour architecture in Morocco. Rising dramatically from the banks of the Ounila River, this fortified village has been continuously inhabited for centuries, its towering adobe walls, decorative grill-work windows, and warm ochre towers forming one of the most photographed silhouettes in all of Africa.
Walking through the winding alleys of the ksar, you’ll ascend past ancient granaries, traditional Berber homes, and communal spaces that speak to centuries of daily life. The adobe construction material — well adapted to the arid southern climate — creates a natural thermal regulation that has sustained communities here since antiquity.
Ait Ben Haddou has served as a backdrop for some of cinema’s most iconic productions, attracting directors drawn to its timeless atmosphere. From its highest point, the views across the valley and surrounding desert plateaus are simply breathtaking.
