5-Day Mount Toubkal Trek Through Berber Villages

Three nights in Atlas Mountain guesthouses before the climb to the highest summit in North Africa.

This 5-day Toubkal trek spends three nights in Berber village guesthouses before the climb turns serious. You’ll walk through the Ait Oussaden Valley to Tiziane, D’knt and Tizi Oussem, sharing home-cooked meals with local families each evening, long before Mount Toubkal itself comes into view.

The route holds the mountain back on purpose. Days one to three are village trekking through walnut groves, cornfields and juniper forest, gaining altitude gradually while you get to know the High Atlas at ground level. Day four raises the stakes with the climb to the Aguelzim Pass at 3,560 metres and a night at the Toubkal Refuge, and day five ends at the triangular marker on the 4,167-metre summit, the highest point in North Africa.

Good fitness is essential and mountaineering experience is not. Four days of gradual altitude gain acclimatize your body naturally before the final push, which is part of why this is considered one of the more approachable ways to reach the summit.

Difficulty at a Glance

Days one through three are moderate village trekking, five to six hours a day and never above roughly 2,250 metres, tiring but not punishing. Day four steps up to around seven hours on the climb to the Aguelzim Pass, and day five, summit day, is the hardest stretch at eight to nine hours. By then, four days of gradual altitude gain will have acclimatized your body naturally.

No two days on this trek sit at the same altitude. Here is how the ground rises and falls across the five days, from Imi Oughlad at 1,450 metres to the 4,167-metre summit and back down to Imlil.

Your Trek Itinerary, Day by Day

1

Marrakech to Tiziane
Into the Ait Oussaden Valley: your first Berber village
Marrakech → Imi Oughlad (1,450m) → Tizi N’Tachte (2,000m) → Tiziane (1,750m)
Approx. 5 hours walking · +550m / −250m · overnight in a village guesthouse

An early pickup from your Marrakech hotel starts the day, followed by a scenic drive south through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Imi Oughlad, at the edge of Toubkal National Park, where you meet your licensed mountain guide and the Berber mule team accompanying the trek.

A gentle two-hour walk heads northeast along mule tracks through cornfields, pine forest and juniper groves to the Tizi N’Tachte pass, with views back over the Imlil and Ait Oussaden valleys and their scattered Berber villages. Lunch is a picnic on the plateau at Imi N’Ifri, followed by an easy two-and-a-half-hour descent southwest into Tiziane, a village built from red clay terraces.

Your first night is spent at a guesthouse in Tiziane, a proper introduction to Berber home life: simple rooms, warm blankets, a home-cooked dinner and the particular quiet of the Atlas Mountains after dark.

2

Tiziane to D’knt
Walnut groves and mountain springs
Tiziane → Tizi N’Taghrhourte (1,995m) → D’knt (1,870m)
Approx. 5 hours walking · +245m / −125m · overnight in a village guesthouse

After breakfast, the trail climbs through walnut groves up the Ait Oussaden Valley to the Tizi N’Taghrhourte pass and the Assaka spring, where the surrounding peaks open into full panorama. Lunch here, at one of the quietest spots on the whole route, is a picnic.

In the afternoon, the path drops through the forest edge into D’knt, known locally as Agouns N’Assoul, a farming village where little has changed in generations. Expect to pass sheep and goat herders on the slopes, women carrying firewood and children waving from doorways.

Dinner and a night’s stay follow at a guesthouse in D’knt, inside a Berber family home. By the second night, the slower rhythm of village life starts to set in.

3

D’knt to Tamsoult
Deeper into the Azzaden Valley
D’knt → Tizi N’Tagdalte → Tizi Oussem (1,850m) → Tamsoult (2,250m)
Approx. 6 hours walking · +380m · overnight in a mountain hut

Three hours of uphill walking through walnut groves and fields of corn and barley, past shepherds and goat herders, lead to the Tizi N’Tagdalte pass. From there the trail descends through juniper forest to a spring for a picnic lunch, before winding down into the Azzaden Valley. You’ll pass through Tizi Oussem before continuing to the summer settlement of Tamsoult.

A mountain hut in Tamsoult marks your last night among the villages before the terrain changes completely. Three days of gradual altitude gain will have prepared your body well for what comes next.

4

The Big Climb: Aguelzim Pass and the Toubkal Refuge
From village trekking to high-altitude mountaineering
Tamsoult (2,250m) → Aguelzim Pass (3,560m) → Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
Approx. 7 hours walking · +1,310m / −353m · overnight at the refuge

After breakfast comes a demanding climb on winding mule tracks out of the Azzaden Valley toward the Aguelzim Pass. The scenery shifts from green valley floor to high-altitude rock and scree; this is the point where the trip turns from cultural trekking into serious mountain climbing.

At the pass, the High Atlas range opens out in every direction, and lunch is taken with the whole panorama as backdrop. Three days of gradual ascent through the villages mean you arrive here already acclimatized, a real advantage over trekkers starting cold from Marrakech.

From the pass, the trail descends to the Toubkal Refuge, either Les Mouflons or the Club Alpin hut, for a night in dormitory-style accommodation. Dinner is served at the refuge, and since tomorrow is summit day, an early night is worth it.

5

Summit Day: The Roof of North Africa
Reaching the highest point in North Africa
Refuge (3,207m) → Summit (4,167m) → Sidi Chamarouch → Imlil → Marrakech
8–9 hours total · +960m / −2,427m · summit reached around dawn

An early start takes you up the south cirque route, over scree and boulders. Four days of gradual altitude gain mean your body is about as well-adjusted as any trekker’s on the mountain that day. The climb to the top takes roughly three hours, ending at the triangular marker on the summit of Mount Toubkal, 4,167 metres above sea level. From here, the view runs a full 360 degrees over the High Atlas range, the edge of the Sahara and the Marrakech plain.

After a rest and lunch back at the refuge, the descent follows the Ait Mizane Valley past the Sidi Chamarouch shrine and its waterfall down to Imlil. A driver is waiting there for the return transfer to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening. Five days, three villages, one summit: trek complete.
