About this tour

Two days out of Marrakech to the Zagora desert and back, sharing a minibus with air conditioning and a driver-guide who speaks English. Day 1 crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, drops to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar, runs on through Ouarzazate and down the Draa Valley to Zagora, and closes with a camel trek at sunset out to a Berber desert camp. Day 2 starts with a sunrise camel ride, then comes back up the Draa Valley, stops at Ouarzazate for the Taourirt Kasbah, and recrosses the Atlas to Marrakech. Groups reach a maximum of 17 travellers and departures go daily, all year, with no minimum group size to hold them up. The price is 69 EUR per person, and that covers the transport, the camp with its dinner and breakfast, plus both camel treks.

Marrakech - Tizi n'Tichka - Aït Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Draa Valley - Zagora - sunset camel trek - camp (7-8h) / Over the Pass, Down the Draa, Camels at Dusk

The minibus picks the group up from Marrakech hotels and riads at around 07:30. The road heads southeast into the High Atlas, climbing past Berber villages and almond groves, with photo stops on the way up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. Around midday comes Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, which the group walks together: earthen alleyways, a climb for the panoramic view, and the classic photograph taken from the far bank. Then on to Ouarzazate, where lunch is at your own expense. The afternoon heads south with the Anti-Atlas alongside, passes the village of Agdez and drops into the Draa Valley. This is the longest oasis in Morocco, and the way through it is lined with date palms and fortified kasbahs, fields of corn, barley and henna between them. You arrive in Zagora late in the afternoon. A camel trek at sunset then carries you over the desert to the Berber camp, where dinner is Moroccan, the Tam-Tam drums come out by the fire, and the night sky is clear.

Zagora - Ouarzazate (Taourirt Kasbah) - Tizi n'Tichka - Marrakech (7-8h) / First Light in the Desert, Then Back over the Atlas

An early wake-up puts you back on a camel for the sunrise ride as the light works its way across the desert, then it is back to the camp for a Moroccan breakfast and onto the minibus. The group drives back up the Draa Valley and stops at Ouarzazate to see the Taourirt Kasbah, once a palace complex, full of intricate detail, leaving time for lunch at a restaurant in town, which you pay for. The afternoon crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, bringing you into Marrakech in the early evening, typically between 18:00 and 19:00, and drops off at hotels and riads.
