Morocco Desert Journeys
2 Day Desert Tour from
Marrakech to Zagora
The Journey
Where the Atlas Mountains
Meet the Saharan Dunes
There is a particular kind of silence that belongs only to the Sahara — the kind you feel before you hear it, standing between towering dunes with nothing but the whisper of wind across warm sand. This 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora is designed to bring you precisely there, without rushing past the extraordinary landscapes that make the journey just as memorable as the destination.
Departing from vibrant Marrakech — a city that itself belongs in a travel legend — you will cross the iconic Tizi n’Tichka pass, a winding road through the High Atlas Mountains at over 2,260 metres above sea level. The views are nothing short of cinematic: ancient Berber villages cling to canyon walls, almond trees trace the terraced hillsides, and the sky turns enormous. Before Morocco reveals its desert face, it first shows you its highlands in all their drama.
Halfway through the first day, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou rises from the earth like something half-remembered from a dream — or from a film set. Many travellers recognise it instantly: Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, and dozens of other productions have used its ochre walls as a backdrop. Walking inside the old ksar, however, you understand that no camera has ever quite captured it.
The afternoon descent into the Draa Valley is one of the most quietly beautiful passages in southern Morocco. The region stretches through a ribbon of lush palm groves — some 1,000 kilometres of them — stitching together oasis villages and ancient ksour before eventually surrendering to open desert. By the time you reach Zagora, the light is golden and soft, and a line of camels is waiting.
“The desert is not empty — it is full of everything that silence has collected over centuries.”
The camel trek at sunset is the kind of moment that stays with people long after the photographs have faded from memory. You move slowly, the animal beneath you breathing steadily, while the dunes shift colour from amber to rose to deep violet. At camp, Berber hospitality takes over: mint tea poured from a height, tagine prepared over coals, drums and song under a sky extravagant with stars. The second day brings a desert sunrise, a return through Ouarzazate — known as the Hollywood of Africa — and an easy return to Marrakech by evening.

Into the Desert — Dunes, Kasbahs & Campfire Nights
- Early morning pickup from your Marrakech accommodation — we begin before the city wakes, heading south through the suburbs and into the open countryside.
- Ascend the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass through the High Atlas, pausing at scenic viewpoints where the panorama stretches across ridgelines to the horizon. Berber villages appear perched impossibly on cliffsides.
- Arrive at Aït Benhaddou — UNESCO-listed, deeply atmospheric, and worth every step up its ancient earthen streets. Lunch is taken at a terrace restaurant with views of the ksar across the river.
- Drive south through the dramatic Draa Valley, passing rose-red kasbahs, oasis villages, and endless rows of date palms as the landscape slowly gives way to open desert.
- Arrive at the edge of the dunes near Zagora in the late afternoon. Mount your camel for the sunset trek — the most beautiful hour in the Sahara — and ride to your Berber camp.
- Evening at camp: traditional dinner around the fire, live music, mint tea, and a sky full of stars. Sleep in a comfortable nomadic tent to the silence of the desert.
Zagora → Ouarzazate → Marrakech
