Quad bikes, two hours of them, out in the Agafay. That desert of stone and rock lies southeast of Marrakech, 30 km away and 40 minutes by road. A car picks you up at your hotel and takes you past olive farms and orange groves to the quad base, where helmet, goggles and hood are handed over, the safety talk happens, and you do a practice circuit on the desert ground before anyone rides out. What follows takes in rocky hills, descents over loose gravel, dry riverbeds and valleys that open out, the Atlas Mountains along the skyline the whole way. There are two halts: a panoramic viewpoint looking down on Lalla Takerkouste lake, and a Bedouin tent where mint tea, homemade crepes and mineral water are waiting. The way back to base follows a different line. The machines are fully automatic, one to a rider, nobody needs to have ridden before, and an expert guide goes out with you. How the day runs

A step-by-step look at your experience.

  1. Marrakech - Agafay Desert (quad base - Lalla Takerkouste viewpoint - Bedouin tent) - Marrakech

    Before the ride
    Getting there, about 40 minutes. Your driver collects you at your Marrakech hotel and heads southeast. Olive farms, orange groves, open countryside, and then the green thins out; by the time you pull in you are on the stone of the Agafay.
    Kitting up. At the quad base you are given a helmet, goggles and a hood. Your guide runs through the controls, which are fully automatic, and the rules for riding off-road. Then a practice circuit on the desert surface itself, so the rocky ground is familiar before you leave the base.

    On the quads, 2 hours
    Into the desert. You follow your guide away from the marked tracks and out into the Agafay's rocky landscape. The ground keeps changing under you: hard-packed rocky hills, loose gravel on the descents, dry riverbeds, then wide open valleys. The Atlas Mountains stay on the horizon the whole time. Pace is set by your guide, quick if you are confident, steady if you are not.
    The lake stop. The route reaches a panoramic viewpoint above Lalla Takerkouste, a man-made lake ringed by the bare Agafay hills with the snow-capped Atlas peaks standing behind, and you stop there for photographs.
    Tea and crepes. Park the machines and step inside a Bedouin tent pitched out in the desert. Mint tea, homemade crepes and mineral water are set out. Take the shade for a while, listen to how quiet the Agafay is, and get your energy back before the second half.
    The way back. The return runs on a different route: more open ground, higher ridges and faster stretches. The last section is where you get the most room to open the throttle.

    Back to the city
    Return transfer, about 40 minutes. There is a chance to clean up at the base, then your driver runs you back into Marrakech, about 40 minutes. Door to door the whole thing runs to roughly 3 hours including the transfers.

How does riding in the Agafay compare with the Palmeraie?

Stone and rock in the Agafay, a lunar sort of landscape, with a viewpoint over the lake, and it sits 40 minutes out. The Palmeraie is palm grove and sandy trails, green, only 20 minutes away, and priced at EUR 39. Wilder in the Agafay; closer and greener in the Palmeraie.

Are there sand dunes in the Agafay?

No. Rocky hills and stone, and no dunes anywhere in it. Sahara dunes would mean a 3-day trip out to Merzouga instead.

How far out of Marrakech is the Agafay?

Roughly 40 minutes on the road, about 30 km, heading southeast. The transfer is part of the price.

Do we ride to Lalla Takerkouste lake?

Yes. The route takes in a panoramic viewpoint above the lake, which is one of the better photo stops on any activity out of Marrakech.

Do I need to have ridden before?
