Late in the afternoon a driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel and drives roughly 45 minutes through olive farms and open countryside to the edge of the Agafay, the desert that sits on the city's doorstep. The whole outing takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Before anyone mounts, the base kits you out in a headscarf and the traditional blue robes of the Sahara, and a guide then leads a one-hour camel ride over rocky hills, dry riverbeds and open ground while the light goes gold, stopping for photographs on the way. The caravan climbs to a high plateau that looks straight at the Atlas Mountains, and there, in a Bedouin tent, mint tea is poured while the sky moves from amber through to pink. The drive back is another 45 minutes and puts you at your hotel in the early evening. Transport is a private air-conditioned vehicle, the departure time shifts through the year to meet sunset, and the guide takes the photographs on your own phone.

The landscapes have nothing in common. The Palmeraie is a green grove of palms, EUR 25, and lies 20 minutes from the city. This one goes out to the Agafay stone desert, 45 minutes away, and is timed for sunset with the Atlas Mountains in view. Different scenery, different mood.
Which season gives the best sunset?
Any of them. The skies are clearest in spring and autumn, the light is warmest and most golden in summer, and in winter there is dramatic snow on the Atlas peaks.
What do I wear?
Closed shoes and clothes you can relax in. The Saharan robes are handed to you on arrival. Add a light layer, since the desert cools fast once the sun is gone.
