Six things to do before you get in

In a petit taxi, ask for the meter before the car moves. A driver who refuses is almost always quoting more than the ride is worth.
For an airport transfer or a private grand taxi, the price is agreed before the luggage is loaded, never on arrival. Our guide on getting from Marrakech airport to the city centre breaks down every option and its budget.
Night rides cost more than the same trip in daylight. The surcharge is standard practice and has nothing to do with the situations described in our page on common tourist scams in Morocco.
Carry small notes and coins. Many drivers cannot break a two hundred dirham note, especially early in the day.
Cars barely fit through the Medina. Your taxi drops you at the nearest gate and the last stretch is on foot, that is simply how it works.
A shared grand taxi is paid per seat, a private one is paid for the whole car. Say which one you want before you get in.

A useful line to show your driver, in Darija: شعل الكونتور عافاك, pronounced chaal el countour aafak, meaning please switch on the meter.

What has changed in Marrakech

The departure point for intercity connections changed during the summer of 2026, and a lot of online guides still give the old address.

The Bab Doukkala bus station stopped operating overnight between 23 and 24 July 2026. Every departure and arrival has moved to the new El Azzouzia bus station, northwest of the city.
The grand taxi stand attached to Bab Doukkala, on Place Sebaa Rjal, was cleared at the same time. Routes to neighbouring cities and provinces now leave from El Azzouzia.
Some routes were redirected to the Kamra stand at Bab Khemis, among them Kelaa des Sraghna, Tamallalt, El Attaouia and Demnate.
From El Azzouzia, urban grand taxi lines link the station to Bab Doukkala, Bab Khemis and the Hay Takaddoum district, at around eight dirhams a seat.
For a traveller, El Azzouzia sits considerably further from the Medina than Bab Doukkala did. Budget one extra taxi ride each way, and leave yourself more time.

These points follow the arrangements announced by the local authorities and reported in the regional press in July 2026. Station layouts can still change, so check on the ground on the day you travel.

Booking ahead instead of flagging one down

Flagging a taxi in the street is still the simplest way to move around, though not always the most comfortable one, especially with children, a late flight or several suitcases. If you would rather know in advance who is picking you up, the Moroccan platform WETAXI.MA lets you order a ride and book a taxi in Morocco, with the price known before departure.

Almost every riad and hotel in the Medina offers an airport transfer as well. It usually costs a little more than a taxi taken on the spot, in exchange for a driver waiting with your name at arrivals, which counts for a lot after a late landing.

Frequently asked questions about taxi fares

It gives an order of magnitude, not a firm price. The ranges come from rides actually paid for in Marrakech, and distances are measured as the crow flies then corrected for the usual detour of the city road network. On a metered ride the gap stays small. On a negotiated ride, everything depends on the conversation with the driver.
Not compared with an equivalent trip in Europe. Most journeys inside the city stay under forty dirhams once the meter is running. The gap widens mainly on rides agreed in advance and on transfers from the airport.
The petit taxi is a small beige car that operates only inside the city limits and carries three passengers at most. The grand taxi is a larger vehicle used between cities and for groups. It runs either per seat on a fixed line, or as a full private hire.
Nothing forces you to get in. On busy streets another taxi usually passes within two or three minutes. If you are in a hurry and accept a set price, agree the amount before setting off and repeat it out loud, so there is no argument on arrival.
Yes. Rides between eight in the evening and six in the morning cost more than the same trip in daylight, and the increase is standard practice. It is not something the driver invents, but do check what the meter is displaying before you leave.
Since the summer of 2026, intercity connections leave from the new El Azzouzia bus station, with some routes from the Kamra stand at Bab Khemis. Bab Doukkala no longer handles them. Build the trip out to El Azzouzia into both your budget and your timing, the station is well outside the centre.
Not in a taxi flagged down in the street. Payment is in cash, in dirhams. Online booking services and transfers arranged by your accommodation often accept other methods. Always keep some change on you.
